    Chiropractic in Malaysia

The first known, American-trained, graduate chiropractor to practice in Malaya was Dr.Andrew Martin, a graduate of the Palmer College of Chiropractic. He practiced in Kuala Lumpur some time prior to commencing practice in Perth, Western Australia in 1926. Dr Martin went on to become a founding member of the Australian Chiropractors Association when it was formed in Sydney on 2nd September 1938. Since that time a number of Australian chiropractors have passed through Malaysia and eventually Malaysia, as itinerant practitioners. It is only in relatively recent years that Malaysian born practitioners have traveled to the United States of America, Australia or England to gain their chiropractic education.

The first of these current practitioners, Dr Thiaga Krishnan graduated from the North Western College of Chiropractic in 1989. The first known female chiropractor in Malaysia was Dr Genevieve Dhamaraj, a graduate of the Macquarie University in Sydney New South Wales. Although now an Australian citizen Dr Dhamaraj was born in Melaka, and emigrated to Australia with her parents in November of 1979.

Over the last seventeen years a number of Australians, Americans, Canadians and South Africans have been invited to come and join practices which in the main have been established by local practitioners. Local chiropractors have recognized the great need of chiropractic care in Malaysia. and they have welcomed the establishment of the first chiropractic course based in South East Asia.

On the 10th of June 2014 the profession welcomed the first Bachelor of Science (Hons) Chiropractic Graduands from the International Medical University Malaysia.[IMU] These twenty eight graduates swelled the number of qualified chiropractors in this country by more than 50 percent. The Chiropractic programme at the IMU Bukit Jalil Campus is accredited by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency and the Council on Chiropractic Education Australasia Inc.
